The conditions we treat
Bladder cancer
We offer transurethral resection of bladder tumours (TURBT), a procedure in which tumours are cut away from the bladder wall. Once removed and analysed, your consultant will be able to assess whether cells are cancerous in order to plan any future treatment.

Kidney cancer
Kidney, or renal cancer, is one of the most common forms of cancer in the UK. We can treat this cancer using an advanced Robotic Assisted Partial Nephrectomy procedure to remove cancerous tissue, which also enables as much health kidney tissue as possible to be retained.

Kidney stones
Kidney stones, also known as stone disease or urolithiasis, describes the formation of solid material within the urinary tract. They are common, with lifetime risk of developing stones at around 10-15%. Our consultants will discuss the best course of action to treat and manage kidney stones.

Prostate cancer
Prostate cancer is a common cancer affecting one in eight men in the UK. It is more common in men over 50, black men and those with a family history of prostate cancer. We can offer diagnostic tests and a range of treatment options to best suit you.

Circumcision
A circumcision is an operation to cut away the foreskin of the penis. Circumcision may be recommended for a variety of reasons, such as tightness of the foreskin, and recurrent balanitis (when the foreskin and head of the penis become inflamed and infected.)

Vasectomy
A vasectomy is the most effective form of contraception for men, and describes a procedure to ensure sterility. During a vasectomy, a short piece of the vas (a muscular tube which conducts sperm from the testicles to the penis prior to ejaculation) is removed from both the right and left sides of the scrotum, interrupting the flow of sperm. After a period of time no sperm is found in the semen, at which point you are considered sterile.

MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scan - uses magnetism to build a series of cross-sectional pictures of inside the body

Ureteroscopy – a tiny, fine telescope is passed through the bladder via the urethra, under general anaesthetic

Blue light cystoscopy - a tiny, thin camera is passed into the urethra, assisted by fluorescent light to show up cancerous tissue

The comprehensive care you will receive covers all needs for both outpatients and inpatients. Our specialist urological nurse sees patients from the point of diagnosis to treatment and follow-up. This enables her to provide valuable emotional support, information and advice. We are also proud to host our own psychosexual specialist nurse, who runs a psychosexual therapy service for patients and couples experiencing difficulties in either their sex lives or relationships.

The patient care pathway
For their initial appointment, patients will be seen at our outpatients and diagnostics centre at The Shard. Most investigations and imaging can take place at the first consultation.
Each London Bridge Urology patient will be discussed within the LBU multidisciplinary team and then the wider London Bridge Hospital urology team meeting. This ensures that patient care is debated, agreed and planned by the leading consultant urologists and consultant radiologists in London and further afield. These meetings also involve all those in each patient’s care, from clinical nurse specialists, to physiotherapists, dietitians and pharmacists.
