¿Qué es la vasectomía?

La vasectomía es un método de control de natalidad masculino, que consiste en detener la provisión de espermatozoides al semen, realizando un corte sobre los conductos deferentes, los cuales son los encargados de unir los testículos (Sitio de formación de los espermatozoides) con los conductos eyaculadores (Sitio donde se expulsa el semen durante la eyaculación).

¿Cuál es la efectividad de una vasectomía?

La efectividad del procedimiento se acerca al 100%, en estudios realizados alrededor del mundo se ha establecido una efectividad del 99.9%1.

Existe un riesgo bajo de recanalización y necesidad de reintervención, el cual ronda en 0.24%2, sin embargo cuando se compara con la efectividad de otros métodos como el uso de condón, el cual con el uso típico tiene una efectividad descrita del 87%3, sigue teniendo una efectividad muy superior.

Comentábamos en el apartado pasado que la efectividad comparada de la vasectomía sobre otros métodos como el uso típico del condón es muy superior, 99.9% vs 87%2,3. La efectividad de la vasectomía es comparable con el 99% de efectividad de una oclusión tubárica, sin embargo se debe de considerar que para realizar la oclusión es necesario la aplicación de anestesia, el cual tiene otros riesgo como el de muerte en 1 de cada 100,000 procedimientos4, cifras que en estudios recientes ya no se han reportado. La oclusión tubárica tiene una tasa baja de complicaciones, reportada en artículos recientes en 1.6%5, sin embargo, al ser una cirugía abdominal, se asocia a complicaciones más graves como lesión de órganos intrabdominales, dehiscencia de la herida, hernias abdominales, embarazos ectópicos, íleo paralítico, sangrado transoperatorio con requerimiento de transfusión, embolismo pulmonar6, y dichas complicaciones se pueden presentar de manera más frecuente en pacientes con cirugías abdominales previas, obesidad y diabetes.

Además, si comparamos el costo a largo plazo de tratamientos anticonceptivos y analgésicos de otros métodos, encontramos que el costo de la vasectomía es tres veces más barata a largo plazo7.

A pesar de los beneficios antes descritos, la vasectomía es el cuarto método más empleado para la anticoncepción, después del condón, anticonceptivos orales y la oclusión Tubárica7. De acuerdo al Sistema Nacional de Información de Salud, en México se realiza una vasectomía por cada diez oclusiones tubáricas, esto probablemente a la deficiencia de información disponible al público masculino, y aunque en los últimos años se ha incrementado las campañas de salud para incrementar la cifra de vasectomías realizadas, todavía queda mucho por hacer.

Mitos alrededor de la vasectomía

Se han corrido algunos rumores infundados respecto a este procedimiento, algunos son los siguientes:

  • No afectará tu rendimiento sexual. La vasectomía no afectará tu deseo sexual ni tu masculinidad de ninguna manera, al no afectar la función testicular, no tiene ninguna interferencia con tu desempeño sexual, de hecho podrás tener actividad sexual más libremente con tu pareja sin el temor de un embarazo no deseado, y sin métodos de barrera que puedan disminuir la sensibilidad de ese momento especial.
  • No desaparece la eyaculación. Solamente el 20% del volumen eyaculado proviene de los testículos, el 80% restante se produce en las vesículas seminales y en la próstata, por lo que no se pierde la eyaculación, tampoco disminuye la sensación de orgasmo, así que pierde preocupación, podrás seguir disfrutando de tus relaciones sexuales sin ningún problema.
  • No causará daño permanente a los órganos genitales. Durante el procedimiento hay poca interferencia con los demás órganos, al ser un procedimiento ambulatorio de poca invasión, el riesgo de lesión de una arteria testicular con posterior atrofia del testículo se disminuye si acudes con un médico especialista en Urología, acude con tu Urólogo de confianza.

  • No aumentará el riesgo de sufrir enfermedades cardíacas. Al igual que con los temores sobre el cáncer, no parece haber ninguna conexión entre la vasectomía y los problemas del corazón.
